(Skokie, IL) Fifty-three 12th grade JCC Camp Chi campers left for Israel this past Monday for the JCC Maccabi Israel immersion travel experience. Larry Goodman, founder of the Lillian and Larry Goodman Foundations, greeted the campers at O’Hare International Airport to wish them happy and safe travels before their departure.
The Lillian and Larry Goodman Foundation provided scholarships subsidizing a large portion of the cost of the trip for each teen. Initiated in 2006, The Goodman Modern Israel History Program at Camp Chi uses experiential learning techniques to explore Israel’s history, culture, and current events. The program, designed for middle and high school age campers, creates a new generation of Jewish leaders as it strengthens the campers’ connection and identity to the Jewish state. When the teens return from their journey, they will be better informed supporters who can counter unfair portrayals of Israel in the classroom, on campus, in the media, and beyond.
The teens that are traveling on the four week trip have spent their summers immersed in the Goodman Modern Israel History Program and this is the first trip to Israel for most of the teens. The Israel trip itinerary takes the teens from the northern Golan region to southern Eilat with stops in between to visit historical sites and other cities including Be’er Sheva where they will tour the Air Force Museum and visit several of the Lillian and Larry Goodman Foundations projects in the region.
When the teens return to camp as counselors, it is expected their stories and experiences will enhance the Goodman Modern Israel History Program for years to come.
